HANDS DOWN the most underrated monster in PAD.
Everyone seems to think that riders are complete trash, but nothing could be further from the truth.
True, their leader skill sucks, but these guys were never meant to be leaders. Let me provide some uses for this guy where he is at least a decent sub if not a great one.

a. Haku team. Coupled with Pandora, this guy sets up a perfect board for Haku. He also provides rare water and fire row enhances/TPAs that haku teams usually lack.

b. Horus Attacker team. Believe it or not, but this monster has the highest attack of any water attacker outside of Awoken Neptune and COLAB specific monsters. And you can't even get Awoken Neptune until you have the ability to beat Zeus Mercury. Even if you have Awoken Neptune, Merlin is still viable because it as two TPAs compared to Neptune's zero. It's also interesting, because you can kind of thing of it as a non-fire red heartbreaker. For horus, who wants a spectrum of colors on his team, this is really great.

c. This one's a little weird, but coupled with DQXQ, it sets up a perfect board for Kirin. I don't know what team you would be using with DQXQ and Merlin as Kirin subs, but I'm just putting it out there.

Beast Rider Wiz Merlin is also interesting because it has a unique attribute typing. In the whole entire game of 1794 monsters, (at the time of this post anyways) there are only 12 monsters with water sub-fire typing, and only 2 that are actually used. (Sigfried and Orochi).

Lastly, lets talk bout those awakenings. Offence is the name of the game with these guys. Water row enhance, Fire row enhace, 2TPAs, as well as a attack boost to make those TPAs even more blistering. I guess that skill bind resist is kinda just there, but if the other monsters on your team have some too, it really makes a difference. There is not a single bad awakening on this monster.

I mean, make no mistake, Merlin ain't as good of a card as Ronia, Kali, or whatever, especially with such little HP and RCV, but it kills me when I hear that this card is trash. It's not. Especially for that little team cost...

I'd have to agree that this guy is VERY far from trash.

I'm just inching up on rank 200, playing without IAP, and managed to run into this guy and my Ronia about the same time. Being rather short on devils at the time, I'd lucked into the materials to Uvo him through the Pal machine.

He has not left my standard team since.

Between two TPAs, the above mentioned high attack, and the fact that inevitably you're gonna run into those few pesky Carbuncles/Chimeras/what-have-yous that cut your fire-damage in half, this guy has more than paid for his position a dozen times over. Single-handedly turning otherwise useless water orbs for my team into a viable option for picking off problem mobs or thinning the herd while I stall is priceless to me. Throw in the red heartbreaker skill as a bonus, and another row enhance?

Suddenly Merlin is the perfect lancer for my Ronia~

Haku teams also lack light and wood row. They lack them because they're useless for the team though. Just like Fire and Water rows. Just saying. I use him on my Urd and Haku teams though. He's also got the best stats of the riders and looks like all of the riders are about to get +60 weighted stats too so he'll be even nicer.
greml1n 4 years ago ( 7.3.0 )
Perfect sub for Urd... Wish I had pulled him just once instead of the dino rider for the Nth time...
Stannis in reply to greml1n 4 years ago ( 7.8.1 )
I use him on my Urd team. The only drawback is his Active Skill isn't always useful unless you're stuck in an all hearts situation since it removes the fire orbs that are already there.
xima yi 4 years ago ( 8.0.1 )
Speaking of Neptune, Merlin is one of his best subs.

What about:

Rider King Arthur
Wiz merlin
Attackerasu (or Cao Cao)

Will work great with Haku if she turns to gain either Attacker/Devil subtype.

I need to ultimate evo this monster, ASAP
Phantasma 5 years ago ( 7.1.1 )
This is exactly what I'm using him for! He's so good with Haku!
By nathan@N17 5 years ago ( 6.5.2 )
Why are you guys complaining about the leader skill. Clearly these guys were meant to be subs and those masks are seriously the easiest. Just because you're level 26 doesn't make them hard...Obviously they are no archdemon or echidna but they are pretty decent subs
Amy in reply to Drew 5 years ago ( 7.2.3 )
I would have to strongly disagree about your statement concerning the Arch Demons. Belial is amazing on a Ronia team with his 2 fire row enhance a 2 skill boost. His active is also very useful. Actually every one of the Arch Demons are amazing subs.Amon is amazing on a Blue Sonia Team and Astroath is going to be a key player with the burst of green devils hitting the scene lately.
Drew 5 years ago ( 7.1.2 )
Let me tell you he is better than the arch demons, they are pretty bad except lucifer
By Ditchwater 5 years ago ( 6.4.3 )
The three additional awakenings are what make this version nice. The dual attack would be very useful on things like Sky Prison where you have to hist multiple targets before they one hit KO you.
By Dylan 5 years ago ( 6.5.2 )
This guy is awesome for a Ronia team. Before you get out the pitchforks, hear me out. This guy's active. Chaos Devil dragon's active. Boom. Fire'n'dark for days.
Stoy 5 years ago ( 7.2.1 )
But then the bad part is that you have this guy and a Chaos Devil Dragon on a Ronia team which makes no sense
By Greg! 5 years ago ( 6.5.5 )
I think this guy can fit in D/F Lucifer team, when it comes to NA.

• Devil subtype
• Fire sub-element
• Water main element gives diversity
• Skill is a heart-changer
• Awesome, high damage output Awoken Skills (Double Two-Pronged, two Row Enhancers)
• High Atk

By Skyknight 5 years ago ( 7.1.1 )
One of the future (as in, while I'm typing this, not even on the Japanese servers yet) Godfest-only characters, Urd, supplies a 2.5* attack multiplier to fire creatures, and a 1.5* multiplier to water creatures. Creatures that are BOTH effectively have a 3.75* multiplier. Two Urdir means 14.0625*.

And Merlin can regularly make sure both are on-field. Along with Urd's ability to make the field entirely fire, water, and heal.

Start planning the other three subordinates, people...

I think he works well as a sub for Gan Ning
By Greg! 5 years ago ( 6.4.5 )
He could definitely fit in a Kirin team. His active skill fits just right with Kirin's leader skill. A possible, but not necessarily better, replacement for Siegfried B/F. Some pros and cons when compared to Siegfried...

• Higher attack
• Superior awakening skills
• Lower cost

• -2000 HP when used instead of Siegfried. Ouch
• Slightly lower RCV
• Jesus F christ, you'll need TWO ancient masks to get this ult evo

As for active skill, both are similar, as they both target heart orbs. Merlin's active seems situational as compared to Siegfried's simple heart changer.

Any comments?
Ledgeitpro 5 years ago ( 6.4.5 )
I think the materials needed should never be a con, if a monster is close but just a little better, its still worth going for regardless of the evo materials. And yeah the hp and rcv are lacking in comparison, but thats what you get when you have a high atk monster. And the double 2 prong is so underrated. Definitely a better choice if you ask me. Aside from the cooldown which isnt too big of a deal depending on the dungeon.
Greg! in reply to Ledgeitpro 5 years ago ( 6.4.5 )
Yeah for teams like Kirin, more ATK is what's needed, since it is a kill-or-be-killed kind of thing, anyway. Unless there are dungeons wherein you really have no choice but to take a hit (preemptive strikes and such)

Also, what exactly happens when you have two Two-Pronged Attacks?

Very disappointed with the ultimate's for the riders
Bahamut in reply to Rubicari 5 years ago ( 6.4.3 )
The point is, on these ult evoes of the riders, they have the unique 2 two pronged attacks, which enhances damage by 50%. i think gungho is starting to make people hunt more tamadras and leave an option to full awaken a monster to its full abilities, just like the Chinese gods ult evo that uses evos descendeds
GuyDudeman in reply to Bahamut 5 years ago ( 6.4.3 )
Two Two Pronged Attacks, does that mean if you match 4+ orbs they attack 3 enemies? What if you mass attack, doesn't that make it useless?
Salsiga in reply to Urau2k 5 years ago ( 7.1.2 )
They are only activated by matching 4 orbs, not more, not less.
For all the details look for "[Puzzle & Dragons] Two-Pronged Awakening Guide" in youtube. A guy called TylerPAD has an awesome video explaining it all.
Char@PF 5 years ago ( 6.4.3 )
The masks are easier to get than Twinlits/Trifruits using Lucifer, though.
Amy 5 years ago ( 7.2.3 )
Are you not looking at how incredible the riders awakenings are! Am I the only one that sees enormous potential at how incredible these awakenings can be for any team.I mean 2 TPAs alone sold me! These guys are AMAZING SUBS!!!!!
Sanjiko in reply to FizzCake 5 years ago ( 6.5.2 )
I've got one of these fully awoken, unfortunately, having both Two-Pronged attacks still only gives 2 attacks when matching 4 orbs. It does give a lovely boost to his attack making him extremely strong when fighting a single monster or two.

It is important to note that when you match four orbs, the damage bonus is added immediately, so if you manage to match four orbs and then you match +5 in the same combo, devastating amounts of damage will follow to all monsters.
Rubicari in reply to Bahamut 5 years ago ( 6.5.5 )
After realizing the advantage of 2 two prong, you are correct sir. These evo's are not bad, I was just hung up on the no change in leader skill. These are obviously meant to be subs, and for a water/devil team this one is very good sub indeed.
Urau2k in reply to Sanjiko 5 years ago ( 6.5.5 )
It sounds like having 2 awoken "two-pronged attack" skills still only attacks 2 monsters if you get four orbs. It also sounds like the damage bonus takes effect with at least 4 so you can still get 5 orbs and get the damage bonus while attacking all monsters. My question is do the damage bonuses stack?

For instance if I have 2 leaders that give 3x to attackers and I get a 3 orb combo and a 5 orb combo, is this right?

A: 100% for 3 orb combo
B: 150% for 5 orb combo
C: 9x multiplier for leader skills
D: 2.25x multiplier for 2 awoken skills

(A + B)*C*D = 5062.5% or 50.625x attack to all monsters

Or will the 2.25x bonus only apply to the 5 orb combo giving a 39.375x attack?

FizzCake in reply to GuyDudeman 5 years ago ( 6.4.5 )
It should attack 3 enemies. I'm not sure as I don't have enough Tamadras to get all the awakenings yet. And yeah, mass attack in his case is useless, but not if you have other Water/Fire monsters attacking a mob along with him. You'll have to weigh the benefits between his 200% 1.7k attack against 3 enemies vs. mass attacks (and Row Enhances if applicable) of other monsters. I'd say if you have at least two other monsters with Water/Fire as main attributes, and if you need to clear a mob or duo-boss like Twinlits, mass attacking would be better. If you just need to focus-fire down a single enemy, get the Two-Pronged attack instead.

These Ultimates are pretty weak. For those super special materials, I expected a change in the LS. Instead, all we get is an extra 2 awaken skills & minor stat bump to Atk.
